Today Barton Bendish is an attractive friendly village ‘off the beaten track’ with the hamlet of Eastmoor nearly a mile away also being part of the parish. Once a bustling community, the village no longer has a shop, post office, school or a regular bus service.
The pub, once known as ‘The Spread Eagle’ and more recently as ‘The Berney Arms’, was first recorded in 1836 and offers food and accommodation. Standing opposite is the Village Hall which, despite the small size of the village, hosts various events throughout the year. The ‘Open Gardens Day’ held each year in June attracts many visitors from West Norfolk and further afield. (Details of village events can be obtained by emailing masons.sandmere@btinternet.com)
